Your Name – One of the 10 Biggest U.S. Anime Opening of All Time

Your Name, the highest-grossing Japanese anime in the world, has already hit U.S. theaters last weekend, debuting at No. 12 at the U.S. box office, grossing an estimated $1.6 million from only 303 theaters. Although the film didn’t make it in the Top 10 biggest anime films in the domestic box office, it did become one of the 10 highest grossing domestic weekends for anime movies.

Despite its limited release, Your Name debuted as the ninth biggest anime opening weekend in the states, ranking just below Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection ‘F’, which premiered in only 183 theaters.

The seven films above Your Name and Resurrection F debuted in more than 900 theaters, so it’s tough to compare them to those films. Check out the list of films in the Top 10 U.S. Openings for Anime (via BoxOfficeMojo):

Given how great Your Name is, it should have been more widely distributed than the other anime films in the list. Your Name is the fourth highest-grossing film in Japan, and seeing it get a limited release here in the U.S. is just disappointing for anime fans.

In terms of overall U.S. box office, Your Name is currently the 14th highest-grossing anime film domestically, with a total earnings of $1.7 million, and it will probably surpass Princess Mononoke ($2.3 million) and Dragon Ball Z: Battle of The Gods ($2.5 million).
