Willem Dafoe has signed a deal to voice Ryuk the apple-obsessed Shinigami (“death god”) in Adam Wingard’s adaptation of the popular manga and anime Death Note, Mashable reports. Just in case if you’re not familiar with Death Note, Ryuk is the Shinigama that drops the Death Note into the human world because he’s bored.

Dafoe is definitely a fantastic choice to play Ryuk. If you’ve seen the anime or the Japanese  live-action films, you would be able to see the resemblance between Dafoe and the menacing character.

The film also stars Nat Wolff,  Margaret Qualley, Keith Stanfield, Paul Nakauchi and Shea Whigham.

Based on the famous Japanese manga written by Tsugumi Ohba and Takeshi Obata, Death Note follows a high school student (Natt Wolff) who comes across a supernatural notebook that bestows him the power to kill anyone by writing their name while imagining their face. Playing like a god, he starts to kill those he deems who don’t deserve to live.

Dan Lin (Sherlock Holmes) and Roy Lee (The Ring) are producing Death Note with Jason Hoffs and Masi Oka.

The project is currently in production. It was originally set up for Warner Bros. before moving to Netflix.
