With the help of series such as The iDOLM@STER, Love Live!, and Wake Up Girls!, the idol anime genre has become one of the most popular ones in the Japanese animation industry, and Japanese media website, Goo, has asked anime fans to vote for their favorite idol anime.
Only 2D anime with idols were ranked, and it did not just involve recent titles, but older ones as well. The poll asked 500 people, 250 of which were male, while another 250 were female. Here are their Top 16:
16) Fancy Lala: The Magic Stage
15) Magical Emi, the Magic Star
14/13) PriPara
14/13) Pretty Rhythm
12) Wake Up, Girls!
11) LocoDol
10) Full Moon o Sagashite
9) Chou Kuse ni Narisou
8) Kirarin ☆ Revolution
7) Uta no Prince-sama
6) Aikatsu!
5) Love Live!
4) AKB0048
3) The iDOLM@STER
2) Creamy Mami, the Magic Angel
1) Macross
Looks like fans went old school with their choices of idol anime as they picked Macross, which is often associated with defining the idol anime genre, and Creamy Mami, considered a classic idol anime, over more recent and popular titles like Love Live! and The iDOLM@STER. The Macross series, even though it is known more for its mecha content, has in fact given the world plenty of unforgettable idols, from Lynn Minmay who revolutionized the idol genre, to Sheryl Nome and Ranka Lee.
For the ongoing -iDOLM@STER- Love Live! rivalry, it seems like the im@s fans have one-upped the Love Livers in this poll, while Wake Up, Girls! fails to make the Top 10.
UtaPri meanwhile is the only all-male idol anime in the list, and they make the Top 10 at #7, along with some other popular idol anime such as Aikatsu and AKB0048.
