As one of the earliest works of TYPE-MOON’s Kinoko Nasu, a real TYPE-MOON junkie will feel compelled to watch Kara no Kyoukai, also known as Garden of Sinners. Set in an alternate parallel universe to other TYPE-MOON series like Tsukihime and Fate/Stay, in both of those other series, you will find several references to Kara no Kyoukai, making it a must-watch for complete understanding of all things TYPE-MOON.
While you will find references to it in other series, Kara no Kyoukai also shares another similarity with its anime brethren – it is kind of a pain to get into if you don’t know the watch order. Like with some other series like Monogatari, there are two ways to watch it: the release order and the chronological order. In the case of Kara no Kyoukai, the best order for a first-time watcher is the release order. While the movies are numbered making for an easy watch, there are some specials that don’t have the same numerical assignment, but they should be left till the end.
As the release order of the movies are also numbered, it is relatively straight-forward. The watch order of Kara no Kyoukai based on release goes as followed:
Again, it is highly recommended that if you are watching for the first time, you watch in the release order. If you’re finding the story a little less cohesive, you might want to watch the Gate of the Seventh Heaven recap as that often puts things in perspective for a lot of new watchers.
However, the true fun of really complicated series is that you can go watch them again in chronological order for a different viewing experience. The chronological order of Kara no Kyoukai is as follows:
