Warner Bros.’ ‘Death Note’ Will Be R-Rated, Producer Assures

The long list of concerns about the U.S. remake of “Death Note” may have just gotten a little shorter.

Speaking with Collider at DICE 2016, producer Roy Lee assured that the Warner Bros. film will target a mature audience, saying, “It’s definitely for adults. It is zero chance it will be below an R-rating.”

That should come as some comfort to fans of the hit manga by Tsugumi Ohba and Takeshi Obata, and its subsequent animated and live-action adaptations. “Death Note” centers on Light Yagami, a genius high school student who discovers a supernatural notebook that gives the owner the power to kill someone simply by writing their name within its pages. Light sets out to cleanse the world of evil, which puts him on a collision course with the enigmatic detective L.

Directed by Adam Wingard (“The Guest,” “You’re Next”) the Warner Bros. version stars Nat Wolff (“Paper Towns”) and Margaret Qualley (“The Leftovers”).

Although “Death Note” hasn’t been officially greenlit, Lee said the cast is in place, and they hope to go into production this year.
