2018 was a great year for anime fans with unique surprises and fun sequels, but what makes one memorable?
Unique characters, an impactful story, great animation, and tight pacing can make a series stick with you long after it ends. A series can also make an impact by inciting extreme laughs, tackling taboos, or just confusing you. Here are the series that fit the bill!
KyoAni produced 2018’s most emotional anime with Violet Evergarden. The high-quality animation and character designs will pull you into a story that celebrates the human spirit.
Darling in the Franxx is a wild, divisive ride that combines mecha action with teenage romance. The high paced action and ships brought fans in, but sadly the story falters at times during the second half. Still, Zero Two and Hiro’s journey was able to captivate fans for 24 episodes.
A Place Further than the Universe most surprising hits. Madhouse’s original story follows a group of girls who join an expedition towards Antartica, and along the way, discover new personal strength. It’s one of the best coming-of-age stories to come out in recent memory!

Check out Pop Team Epic if you want a mind-melting experience. Words can’t do the series justice, just know that it’s a wild comedy consisting of various skits and different art styles.
My Hero Academia is the world’s most popular shonen series and for good reason! The cast, unique powers, great action scenes, and engaging story is plain ol’ addicting. Season three does a great job adapting the Forest Training Camp, Hideout Raid, and Provisional Hero License Exam arcs. It’s never been a better time to dive into the series!
Steins;Gate 0 is an alternate route that takes place after Steins;Gate. Without spoiling anything, it’s a brooding tale that takes topics of artificial intelligence, depression, and conquering personal tragedy.
Wotakoi: Love is Hard for Otaku is everything you love about rom-coms and otaku culture. The couples are incredibly cute, the humor is sharp, and you may learn a few things about Monster Hunter.
Megalo Box is a throwback to a bygone era. It’s a gritty tale about a poverty-stricken boxer who attempts to show the Megalo Box corporation the power of the human spirit. Fans will love the boxing action, humanized story, hip-hop infused soundtrack, and lo-fi aesthetic.
Cells at Work! makes learning biology a ton of fun through the use of humor, personified cells, and action. It’s edutainment at it’s best, and you may learn a few things that will help in Bio 101.
Banana Fish is not for the faint of heart. The gritty series tackles mature topics like drug abuse, human trafficking, and the consequences of violence while showing how far hope can take people.
Asobi Asobase is everything that fans love about comedies and slice-of-life stories. The beautiful watercolor art style hides the insanity of the main trio as they navigate absurd situations. We dare you not to smile while watching it!
