I remember a time where glasses had a different stigma of being nerdy, but these days, that is not quite the same. Anime in particular has helped shaped a different sort of point of view with the meganekko archetype, as they are often called. These meganekko girls are often shy with big glasses, only for you to often later find out that they are some of the most intelligent characters in the series. Everyone loves a glasses girl, and we’ve got plenty of them below.
Anri stars off your typical glasses girl. She is plain, demure, and almost downright boring to watch. However, as Durarara goes on, you start to see a different girl beneath the glasses with a dark secret. Throughout the series, she is calm and almost calculating in everything she does. Yet, there are small moments in Durarara when she is cute, however sparse they are.
Yuki’s whole character surrounds her being a glasses girl – someone you are meant not to notice at times. However, Yuki certainly has her cute moments. Although, Haruhi prefers to take her glasses and put them on Mikuru to make her the perfect moe blob. Yet, the more you see of Yuki, the more you begin to understand her true character.
In her first chronological appearance, Tsubasa is presented as that classic nerdy school girl type with braids and glasses. Strangely enough, it seems like her glasses were there to almost de-sexualize her since in later series she gets much more abused for fan service in that regard, especially since her chest region grows significantly.
Mirai is almost the quintessential glasses girl in anime. She is shy, unconfident, and KyoAni does a great job with how her glasses move around her face in the most adorably nerdy way. And yet, as a glasses character, she is also the most adorable badass of the series. Someone you want to protect, but also someone who can protect herself.
Unlike her GGO avatar, Shino in real life is significantly less cool. She is calm much like how she is in the game, but is damaged from several traumas throughout her life. She even joined GGO to get over her fear of guns. That being said, while she is not particularly weak, she is picked on in school and as such, tries to be as low-key as possible.
Who knew an alien would be so cute and wear glasses. Ichika tries her darnedest to not draw attention to herself, but with red hair and glasses in Japan, that’s probably not so easy to do. However, the true pleasure of Waiting in Summer is in fact her character. She is bubbly, silly, but also has many of those timid glasses wearing traits that we have come to love.
Nina, as her glasses suggest, is an actual genius. Her intellect far surpasses her peers, and she often acts like it. She is shy and afraid of being ostracized, and yet, inside her is a passion. You will find that many glasses girls in anime have something they are passionate about, but her passion can be a bit obsessive.
While you only get glimpses in flashbacks, Homura used to be an honest to god meganekko. She didn’t talk much and was eventually brought out of her shell by Madoka. Unfortunately, the Homura we got to know is one who took the glasses off when she became serious about her mission.
