Ceiling Fan Buyer's Guide

It’s time to install some ceiling fans in your house to keep you cooler in the summer. Having a gentle breeze circulating in your rooms might stop you from running the air conditioner as much on hot days, saving you money as it keeps you comfortable.

Choosing a ceiling fan may seem like a straightforward task, but it can make your head spin. There are so many out there to choose from, how can you know which one is the best for you? You’ll want to ask yourself these questions before purchasing so you’re not left with buyer’s regret.

How Much Head Clearance Will You Need?

Do you have low ceilings? If so, you may want to opt for a flush mount ceiling fan. This kind will hug the ceiling rather than hanging down so much. That will protect the noggins of the taller people walking through your room. If you have high ceilings, you can opt for any ceiling fan you want.

How Do You Want to Control the Fan?

The fan you choose will come with its own mode of operation. If you’re bound and determined not to move from the couch whenever you want to turn the fan on or adjust the speed, you’ll want to opt for one that comes with a remote. If you don’t mind stretching your legs whenever you want to change the setting, then you can get one that operates from a switch on the wall or a pull chain. If you’re putting one in your bedroom, it would be a good idea to go for one with a remote if you don’t want to have to get up in the middle of the night to turn it on or off.

Does Your Room Have Adequate Light?

If you’re happy with the amount of light your room currently has, then you’re fine to get a ceiling fan that doesn’t have a light on the unit. If your room is a little darker than you’d like, you may want to consider buying a ceiling fan with a built-in light. Some of them have dimming features that let you adjust how much light you want – you can put it on a low-light setting or the brightest, depending upon your needs.

What is the Size of Your Room?

There is a big difference when it comes to the blade spans of various ceiling fan models. If you have a tiny room, you don’t want a fan with a blade span of 80 inches because it will look strange in such a small space. And likewise, you don’t want a giant room to have a tiny fan because it won’t offer enough air circulation.

Not sure what size of fan would look best in your room? The American Lighting Association offers some guidance on that:

  • If your room is up to 75 square feet, go with a fan that is 36 inches or less
  • For rooms that are 75 to 144 square feet, choose a ceiling fan between 36 to 42 inches
  • A room that is 144 to 225 square feet is generally best served by a fan that is 44 to 50 inches
  • Rooms ranging from 225 to 400 square feet should have a fan that is 50 to 54 inches
  • If you have a room bigger than 400 square feet, you might want to consider moving up to a fan that has 60- to 80-inch blades

How Efficient Is The Fan?

If you’re the type who likes to save energy by having efficient appliances and equipment, you may want to consider the airflow efficiency on a fan before buying it. While not every fan lists this, some do. The airflow efficiency will tell you how much air is moved by the fan for every watt of electricity used by it.

What Kind of Vibe Are You Going For?

Ceiling fans aren’t all about function. The right ones can set the whole tone for a room’s décor. Do you want to feel like you’re on vacation on a Monday night, even though you know you have to go into work the next morning? Then maybe a ceiling fan that has blades that look like palm leaves would do the trick. If you make yourself a cocktail and sit under the palm leaf blades, you could almost pretend you’re sitting in a beach resort somewhere. There are ceiling fans that will suit almost any style you can think of, including retro, modern, and more.

Do You Want a Reversible Motor?

Some fans spin both counter-clockwise and clockwise. Why should you care if it does? If you want to use your fan in the winter to push down the warmer air that rises up and stays near your ceiling, you’ll need a fan that also spins clockwise. This will move the toastier air back down on you, making you feel warmer in the winter and save you some money because you won’t have to set your thermostat as high.
