Animation in Japan is on a whole other level to the rest of the world. Whereas for most cultures animation is primarily aimed towards younger audiences, in Japan the medium covers any topic you care to think of.
From cookery and sports dramas to shonen anime aimed at teens, wading through the thousands of anime series which have been made over the last few decades can be something of a minefield. Discovering the real gems isn’t made any easier by the fact that some series have been running for many seasons, so it’s always good to be doubly sure it’ll be worth your time before dipping in.
Inevitably when putting together a list such as this there are plenty of great series which fall by the wayside, with quite literally hundreds which are worthy of an honourable mention but which sadly space won’t allow for. If you think there’s a glaring omission here, feel free to hit us up in the comments.
In a word, abs!
Aka, an accurate depiction of high school life.
As described by the creators of Stranger Things, “It’s like an ultraviolet E.T.!”
No logs found anywhere.
Never has an anime about cards been so engrossing!
Lower than expected but at least it’s not the films or the 2016 version.
Sah much magic.
Alucard won’t be happy at this low placing…
More pets please!
Don’t mess with Tsuna!
Don’t tell Yusuke about being placed at only 90!
Don’t get on Yona’s bad side!
Oh right, the comet is named Charlotte, not any of the characters!
A vampire story involving an end-of-the-world element, what’s not to like?
That is badass and lethal in equal measure!
Cute yet scary!
Could get lost forever in those adorable eyes!
A classic that Hollywood shouldn’t have touched.
Never has basketball been more badass!
Need a bigger hairdryer.
Gotta catch’em all!
A masterpiece that’s surprisingly low on a list like this.
Trippy AF.
