Studio Ghibli’s “Nonaka-kun Hatsu Ghibli Dayori” blog revealed that the studio received a record number of applicants for Hayao Miyazaki’s new (and final) feature film. The record number of applicants also included foreign artists that are hoping to work on the film. In fact, Studio Ghibli’s production and office staff had to help with the screening process!
Studio Ghibli put out a hiring notice for in-between animators and background artists in May. The studio is finalizing the applicants and anyone accepted will take a practical exam in September before officially joining the project in October. The new employees will work under a three-year contract, receive a 200,000 yen ($1,800) monthly salary, and their travel and social insurance expenses will be covered by the studio.
Last year, Miyazaki stated his desire to work on a final feature length film since he wasn’t satisfied with only working on the Kemushi no Boro CGI short. The short was scheduled to debut in July, but has been indefinitely delayed.
It’s worth noting that Miyazaki’s project has not been officially green-lit by Studio Ghibli. In April, producer Toshio Suzuki said Miyazaki only has 20 minutes of storyboards completed so far. Suzuki has also voiced his concern about Miyazaki not being able to finish the project will he’s still alive.
Miyazaki has suggested that he wants the film finished in time for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. Suzuki has commented that this time frame is impossible to meet.
