15 Places to Legally Stream Anime Around the World

When it comes to anime, if you want to keep watching it long into your golden years, you had best start paying for it at some point, or support the sites that are. However, there are a surprising variety of options for viewers around the world. Some require you to pay a subscription fee while many sites actually have free to use options. So, where can you start watching?

Crunchyroll

Region Availability: Virtually all countries outside of Asia

Yup, the anime streaming giant! Crunchyroll not only offers simulcast, HD, and ad-free streaming with its $6.95 per month plan, but if you can wait a week, you can watch the new episodes of your favorite series for free. However, you have limited quality and have to sit through ads. However, with a massive library and new shows added with each season, there is always something to watch.

Netflix

Region Availability: Global except China, Crimea, North Korea, and Syria
Sub/Dub?: Mostly dubbed, some sub

While Netflix is great for movies and other TV, they don’t have the greatest anime selection in the world. While they have recently expanded into some subbed works, the majority of their collection is dubbed. Still the $9.99 per month subscription fee might be worth it for the other content alone.

Hulu

Price: $7.99 per month /  $11.99 per month (no commercials)

While Hulu gets a lot of its selection from Crunchyroll, they also host a number of other licensors as well, including Funimation. For those who want to watch a number of different anime series, this is a good place to do so particularly since you can watch regular TV and movies too. The downside is that Hulu still features ads with the basic subscription. However, you can now pay to get rid of them.

Amazon Instant Video

Amazon has come a long way in the streaming game, and have actually acquired a fair bit of anime for its streaming service. While you can go to the website to rent or buy from the service, the streaming is only available to Amazon Prime members for $79 per year (now with less daunting $10 per month options). You can stream many of the videos for free with the membership which can also hook up to Roku, Amazon Fire TV, and next gen consoles.

Wakanim

Region Availability: France, U.K., and other French-speaking countries
Sub/Dub?: Sub and a few dubs
Price: Free

Primarily the French streaming site, but also available in the U.K., Wakanim actually has a respectable collection, but still comes up short to other multi-lingual sites like Crunchyroll.

Funimation

Region Availability: U.S., Canada, U.K.

Price: $4.99 per month (for sub) / $7.99 per month (for everything)

For those that like a large amount of dubbed anime, there is no better place to watch it than Funimation. Although their dubs may not always be of quality, they have brought a number of English localizations out of Japan. Unfortunately, you have to pay. They offer a $4.99 subscription for those that only want to watch subs, but full access will cost you $7.99. However, you can watch some videos for free, providing you can put up with the ads.

AnimeLab

Exclusive to AU/NZ, most of the anime is stocked through Funimation, but it has other licenses as well. While you need to sign up, the anime is free and it streams in HD as well.

Hanabee

Exclusive to AU/NZ, Hanabee has been slowly expanding their selection for years and have actually acquired quite a good bit of anime for those fans down under. You can sign up and stream for free as well as buy physical copies of the anime from the site.

Viz

Price: Free

Although smaller in selection, limited only to Viz titles, you can watch them all for free. Many of the series are fairly long, so it is a decent way to spend some time.

The Anime Network

Region Availability: North America and U.K.

As expected from for a website called “The Anime Network,” this streaming site actually has quite the variety of different shows. Unfortunately, aside from a free two-week free trial, there are no free watching options. If you have cable or satellite TV, you may also be able to get this service as a station. However, the streaming service is $6.95 per month, but they do have an app for video game consoles and services like Roku.

Animax TV

Region Availability: U.K. and Ireland

While a select few simulcast series are available for free, viewers can enjoy older anime series for a reasonable £3.99 a month.

Viewster

Viewster not only stocks anime, but it also has cartoons, comedies, and drama series from around Asia and the world. Even if you get bored of anime, Viewster has a lot of other option available for free, no registration required.

Manga Entertainment

While you don’t see a lot of anime made by Manga Entertainment anymore, they still allow you to watch all their old school series for free.

MyAnimeList

MyAnimeList, the site that you have likely been using to keep track of what anime series you have watched and what chapter of manga you were on before the series went on hiatus, also now streams anime. Getting its videos from Hulu, Daisuki, and Crunchyroll, you can watch anime on MAL completely free. Providing they have the series, you can watch it right on the series page.
