The Empty Throne is a throne that supposedly sits at the center of the world. It is kept on top of a three-level platform, and has several swords and axes planted in the floor of the first and third levels.

The 20 weapons right in front of the throne symbolize the creators of the World Government, and the throne represents a declaration of peace that no one person will ever take full control of the world. When they come to Reverie, all royals must pledge to not take the throne.

The Characteristics of the Throne

One thing I noticed from this chapter is the way the throne is built. First, it has two armrests in the shape of a lion, or maybe a seahorse/lion. I tried to find the meaning of the lion as a symbol in One Piece but I couldn’t find anything. In any case this could mean nothing because the lion is generally a symbol of royalty. Second, and most importantly, as the throne goes up we can observe white spots in a black background, which to me seems to be a reference to islands and could function as an undecipherable-as-of-yet map of some kind. The number of the islands counts up to 33, which perhaps is the total number of islands in the Grand Line.
