The ANBU is a special tactical assassination unit that work directly under the Kage. In Konoha, a special unit called the Root exist. They work under Danzō Shimura. They are hand-picked by their Kage, because of their specific skills.

10. Yugao Uzuki 
Yugao Uzuki was a member of Konoha’s root from a very young age. She was later assigned to Team Rō, under Kakashi Hatake. Moreover, Yugao was exceptionally skilled in Kenjutsu and Sensory techniques.
In the 4th Great Ninja War, she also helped to seal her lover, Hayate.
9. Kabuto Yakushi 
Kabuto Yakushi was a member of the root ANBU under Danzō Shimura. He was sent to spy on various countries. Kabuto was a decent spy. On on occasion, he accidentally killed his mother, and failed to save her. This is also where Kabuto found the company of Orochimaru.
8. Sai 
Sai was also a member of the Root ANBU. He lived alone with his adoptive brother Shin, who died. Sai lived the rest if his life as a member of the Root. He had no emotions, not until he faced Sasuke Uchiha and knew what true fear was.
7. Orochimaru 
After the 2nd Great Ninja War, Orochimaru became affiliated with the Root under Danzō Shimura. There he carried out multiple experiments, including Yamato. Also, He worked on Danzō’s arm, which had the DNA of the First Hokage.
6. Yamato 
Yamato was an experiment of Orochimaru. He was injected with the DNA of Hashirama Senju. Yamato was the only one who survived. Later, he was taken to the Root and trained in the ways of the Wood Release.
5. Fū Yamanaka 
Fū Yamanaka was also a member of Konoha’s Root ANBU. He was one of Danzō’s most trustworthy members. Furthermore, Fū was an exceptional sensory ninja. Unfortunately, he died during the 5 Kage Summit, at the hands of Obito Uchiha.
4. Torune Aburame 
Torune Aburame was a member of Konoha’s Aburame Clan. He was taken in by Shino’s Family, where he formed a brotherly bond with Shino. According to Danzo, he was one of the two most skilled members of Konoha’s Root ANBU.
Moreover, Torune was also ressurected during the 4th Great Ninja War, where he was defeated by Shino Aburame.
3. Kakashi Hatake 
In the anime, Kakashi Hatake was also a part of the ANBU. Before he was a Jōnin Team leader, Kakashi was the leader of Team Rō. He was also feared by all other nations because of his Lightning blade. Kakashi killed many Shinobi during his time with the ANBU. He was later relieved of this duty by Hiruzen Sarutobi.
2. Itachi Uchiha 
Itachi Uchiha was also a member of the Root. At first, he worked under Kakashi. Later, he was assigned his own team. Also, Itachi carried out his last mission of protecting the village from the Coup, while he was a member of the ANBU.
1. Danzō Shimura 
Danzō Shimura was the leader of the Root ANBU, and also its founder. He carried out all the evil tasks the village had to do, in order to protect it against threats. In his own right, Danzō worked to maintain peace throughout the Village. Moreover, He wanted to become the Hokage of the Leaf, and reform it according to his own Principles.
